Beyond the Bubble: Value Stocks That Stand Out

Beyond the Bubble: Value Stocks That Stand Out

As a long-term buy and hold investor, I’ve learned the importance of seeking out value stocks with solid fundamentals and broad strength, especially now that global stock markets are frequently described as expensive or even “bubble-like”. In the US, Switzerland, and Germany, major indices remain near historic highs despite only mild recent corrections, and headlines continue to warn about overstretched valuations, particularly in tech-heavy sectors where price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios above 30 or 40 are considered pricey for anyone looking for lasting returns. Some stocks even have three-digit P/E ratios.

Switzerland, too, offers stability with blue chips and defensive names, but the average P/E hovers around 22, historically on the expensive side, even with some lagging sectors after the post-pandemic boom. Germany presents a similar story: growth and momentum stocks have rallied, but beneath the surface are select value-oriented industries, such as energy and industrials, where reasonable P/E ratios, lower price-to-book (P/B) values, and healthier dividend yields (see the ranks with an Unlimited subscription) mark the overlooked opportunities.

This is where Obermatt’s proprietary Value Rank methodology makes a difference. By rating stocks on a blend of P/E, P/B, price-to-sales, and dividend yield and benchmarking each against its sector peers, Obermatt goes beyond “cheap on paper,” surfacing companies that stand out for value and quality. For my own portfolio, I filter for stocks that appear undervalued, but also score high on Obermatt’s 360° View, which signals strength in Safety, Growth, and Sentiment factors. With Obermatt, you only need to look for ranks that are high, with 100 being the strongest rating.

For retail investors like me, the noise may be louder than ever. But value still exists if you know where and how to look. Obermatt’s data-driven research cuts through the crowd to help build a portfolio designed for the long term.
